Job Summary

The Chief Librarian at Providence College of Engineering is responsible for leading the development, operation, and maintenance of the library services. This role involves promoting innovative library services, supporting information literacy, managing library resources, and ensuring the library is a hub of learning and research for the college community.

Roles & Responsibilities

Library & Information Service Planning & Development

  • Develop and promote the vision, strategies, and plans for library services in collaboration with the Principal and other stakeholders.
  • Create and manage annual and long-term plans for library services development, including budgeting and staffing.

Library Operations & Environment

  • Manage library operations to ensure that library services and resources are provided efficiently and within budget.
  • Maintain a welcoming, safe, and functional library environment both onsite and online.

Information Literacy & Support

  • Promote and support a program of information literacy for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Assist teachers and faculty in finding resources, planning interdisciplinary units, and supporting research needs.

Resource Management

  • Lead the acquisition, curation, and organization of all library resources, including print, digital, and audio-visual materials.
  • Ensure accurate inventory, cataloging, and classification of library materials.

Staff Management

  • Manage the performance, training, and development of library staff.
  • Support the professional development of library staff to raise professional standards.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Maintain positive relationships with academic and support leadership, faculty, and the broader college community.
  • Communicate the needs of the library to the Senior Leadership Team and participate in relevant committees and initiatives.

Budget & Financial Management

  • Establish and manage the budget for library and information services.
  • Order materials, maintain records, and ensure cost-effective library services.

  • Ensure the library is a central hub for learning and research.

  • Promote and support information literacy programs for students, faculty, and staff.

  • Ensure the library's collections are relevant, up-to-date, and accessible.
  • Maintain high standards in the acquisition, cataloging, and classification of library materials.

4. Staff Development

  • Support the professional development of library staff to enhance their skills and expertise.
  • Foster a positive and productive work environment within the library team.

5. Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with faculty, students, and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure the library is integrated into the academic and research activities of the college.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

1. User Satisfaction

  • Conduct regular surveys to measure user satisfaction with library services and resources.
  • Track feedback and implement changes based on user input.

2. Collection Performance

  • Monitor the condition and relevance of library materials (e.g., grubby items, dead items, popular author and subject provision).
  • Ensure that the collection matches demand and is free from overstocked or understocked subject areas.

3. Information Literacy Program Effectiveness

  • Track the participation and outcomes of information literacy programs.
  • Evaluate the impact of these programs on students' research skills and academic performance.

4. Resource Utilization

  • Measure the usage of library resources, including circulation rates, database access, and other metrics.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of resource acquisition and management processes.

5. Staff Performance & Development

  • Evaluate staff performance through regular reviews and feedback.
  • Track the participation of library staff in professional development activities and their impact on service quality.

6. Budget Management

  • Monitor and report on budget adherence and cost-effectiveness of library services.
  • Ensure that financial resources are allocated efficiently to support library operations and development.

7. Community Engagement & Collaboration

  • Measure the level of collaboration with faculty and other departments through joint projects and initiatives.
  • Track the participation of the library in college-wide committees and events.
